Dimethyl Sulfate
Basic Information
Dimethyl sulfate (Dimethyl Sulfate, DMS) is an organic compound, with the molecular formula written as (CH₃O)₂SO₂, (CH₃)₂SO₄, or Me₂SO₄, and can be considered as dimethyl ester of sulfuric acid. It is mainly used as an efficient methylating reagent in organic synthesis. Under standard conditions, dimethyl sulfate is a colorless oily liquid with a slight onion odor. It is similar to all strong alkylating reagents, with high toxicity, and contact with the skin or inhalation poses serious hazards.
