Nitromethane
Basic Information
Methyle nitrate (Nitromethane, NM), molecular formula CH₃NO₂, is the simplest organic nitro compound. At room temperature, it is a colorless, oily liquid with a faint aromatic odor, has a high polarity, is flammable, toxic, explosive, and can be used as fuel. The boiling point is 101.2°C, it is easy to volatilize when heated, and has a relatively low melting point, maintaining liquid properties at low temperatures.

Usage
Nitromethane can be miscible with ethanol, acetone, and ether, making it a good solvent and extractant. Due to the strong activity of nitro α-hydrogen, nitromethane is also a common raw material in chemical and organic synthesis, used for producing pharmaceuticals, pesticides, explosives, dyes, and fibers.
